The park is home to over 300 mountain Gorillas which are part of the greater Virunga conservation area and there are 10 families of them that have been habituated for trekking and these can can be found within the park’s boundaries most of the time. The park boasts of the largest number of habituated mountain Gorilla families in the world over. Keep in mind that these Gorillas may not mind about the borders but this not likely in case of volcanoes. The game park covers an area of about 160 sq km of intertwined rain and bamboo forests ranging at an altitude from 2,400 to 4,500 meters above sea level.
